something old is something new

yesterday was a good day. it was nice out, the sun was shining..what do you do on days like this? go shopping! :) i'm not talking about cooping yourself up in a sterile mall. go outside! get some fresh air and walk around a downtown of your choice...my choice yesterday was royal oak. while i found some pretty cool things, my money found its way out of my wallet. it's cool though, i have a few nice pieces to show for it.

i went to my friend brandon's store, project 3, and found this hoodie that i love ALMOST as much as my junk food hoodie..it's so soft and cut precisely for a woman. if you love casual clothes, jeans and really soft t-shirts, go there. it's on washington ave. next to lilly's seafood.

also on washington is a great men & women's vintage clothing store called lost & found vintage. it's nice to sift through their merchandise because all the ugly crap has already been weeded out for you! i scored these two pieces that i'm looking forward to wearing..a silk dress from the 40's and a leather jacket from the 80's that's reminiscent of a michael jackson video. (i will be removing the shoulder pads.)

a bout de souffle

this is something else i learned how to do in my photo transfer class. it's a gel medium transfer. you basically take a photocopied picture and coat the image w/ gel medium (not too thick.) you lay it face down on the surface you want the image transfered to and make sure to burnish it so that the image transfers evenly. wait for it to dry and then rub the paper off w/ warm water and a sponge. all that will be left is the image (reversed, of course.) how cool is that?? this is an image of jean seberg on a tile. i put a thin layer of tissue over it and coated it with a thin layer of gel medium. i didn't wait for it to dry long enough, that's why there are torn bits, but i ended up liking the rustic look of it!

i love this idea purely for the fact that it supports my love for mismatched and/or unusual plates. what a great way to put them on display! beware of close moving trains and earthquakes.

i heart homework

i am one of the rare types of people that actually liked school and homework and all that stuff that kids complain about. there's something about a classroom setting that makes my stomach twist and feel nostalgic in a good way. this past sunday i took a class at hollander's in ann arbor. hollander's is the kind of store that scrapbookers, artists and regular people alike can get lost in. it's filled with decorative paper, art supplies, books, and creative cards and stationery. they also hold various types of creative classes in their lower level workshop. i took a photo transfer class because i've always wanted to learn the different techniques so i could add a different element to my paintings or get new ideas for other things. my instructor, linda soberman, turned out to be my mom's boss from YEARS ago when we still lived in oak park and she worked in a studio making costume jewelry. i would sometimes fake sick so i could go to work with my mom. i loved the fact that they gave me so much attention and i had a tin coffee can filled with colored pencils all to myself!
i learned some pretty cool techniques that i can't wait to try out! i also learned that one thing i don't miss about taking classes are the ANNOYING people who ask STUPID questions because they either don't listen or they love hearing the sound of their own voice. anyway...this is linda soberman's website. i urge you to check it out since she has some really cool pieces: www.lindasoberman.com.

the image above is something i created using decorative paper and a packing tape transfer. that basically means that i transfered the photo onto a piece of packing tape using magic. :) i framed it and gave it to renee..she loved it!

are you a betty or a veronica?

archie and friends played a big part in my preteen years. i was obsessed w/ procuring as many copies of archie comics as i could. i fantasized about being one of the gang and even had a crush on archie! what was wrong w/ me?? he's not even real. anyway, i never understood why archie could never choose between betty and veronica. i liked betty so much more. she was far more thoughtful and i thought she was prettier. (even though her and veronica pretty much have the same face, just different color hair.) veronica was always so mean and bossy, i just didn't get why archie went out with her so often.
so are you a betty? or a veronica?

le voyage du ballon rouge...

...a.k.a. "flight of the red balloon."
there are some movies that make you think, some that make you laugh or cry and even some that make you angry..this film made me cock my head to the left and observe for two hours. that's a good thing in my book. this film was in homage to albert lamorisse's children's classic film from 1956, "the red balloon," about a little boy and a red balloon. do you remember it? i have a faded memory of watching it in school and being entranced by the sight of the luscious red balloon making it's way across paris.
hou hsiao-hsien's filmmaking is at once simple and grand. his camera pans around paris as if we are the red balloon, floating around the characters and looking in on their everyday lives. the script was largely improvised which was refreshing since the actors were in theory playing a part of themselves. juliette binoche played a discomposed, yet endearing mother so incredibly well and the part of her son, simon, was given to the coolest looking french six year-old in paris. (seriously...what is it about the french? they are just born cool.) song fang, the chinese nanny, held such grace that watching her do something mundane, like preparing a snack for simon, was like watching a dancer in a ballet.
the music throughout the film was more of a backdrop..you heard it if you wanted to. but then the song at the very end of the film commanded your attention..(i've been trying to find out who it is by, but i can't seem to find that info!)
hou's "le voyage du ballon rouge" is his first foray into filming outside of asia, but i am quite sure it will not be his last.

vegan jelly donut cupcakes

i made these last night for adam (renee's husband) since he just celebrated his birthday. i know some people sneer at the sight or sound of the "v" word, but trust me guys, these are scrumptious. and vegan just means is that it's lacking any animal products or byproducts, not that it's made with cardboard. i got this recipe out of my new favorite cookbook "veganomicon" which alex slyly bought me since he knows i'll try all the recipes out on him!

a little obsession of mine

i am intensely drawn to power lines. i love their silhouettes against a gray sky, a blue sky, a sunset, whatever it may be..i just love nature juxtaposed with something manmade and a little dated. it's also something we're so accustomed to that we sometimes forget they're even there. but i pay attention to them because i think they're beautiful. don't you?

smart (and sanitary) tip

i think we've all heard by now that our kitchen sponge harbors the most germs in our houses..more than the toilet!!! i just read a great tip on kitchn.com that says to microwave your WET sponge for 2 minutes to kill 99.9% of the germs festering inside all those precious little holes. (make sure it's wet cuz putting a dry sponge in the microwave can be a fire hazard.)

lucy had a hard day today. we went to the vet.
i held her in my arms like a baby and her paws
were wrapped around my neck like a monkey.
she was sticking her head under my neck and held on tight.
this is her napping. and then waking up.

penelope also went to the vet. she was growling and hissing at the vet.
she doesn't like me so much right now. michelle and i gave her a bath.
that was not fun for us.

foooood!!!

i made this bagel sandwich for lunch a couple days ago. i wanted to share it with you because it was delicious and i want to give you an easy dressing recipe that i swear by (which i originally found in one of giada delaurentiis' cookbooks.) i covered both sides of the bagel with my favorite alternative to butter: earth balance vegan buttery spread. the contents of this sandwich are as follows: mixed greens w/ shallot vinaigrette dressing, poached egg, pasta sauce and shaved fresh parmesan. mmm!!!
shallot vinaigrette dressing:
mince 1 medium shallot and throw in a bowl. drench minced shallot w/ balsamic vinegar (just enough to make a little puddle in the bottom of the bowl.) add olive oil (equal amount to balsamic.) add salt and pepper. add about a tablespoon or less of honey. whisk it all together w/ a fork. voila! you have an easy dressing. just toss in your greens and coat them with the dressing. (it's easiest to do w/ tongs.)
also, i made AMAZING cupcakes yesterday. i made vegan jelly donut cupcakes. they were seriously awesome and tasted like a donut, but lighter. it's so unlike me that i didn't take a picture for you! i will for sure make them again and i will take one next time.

marvelously macabre

some of you may have already seen these pictures, but for those of you who have not, this is a REAL human skull encrusted with REAL diamonds. british artist damien hirst's main theme in his art is death. he wanted to "laugh in the face of death" with this piece from 2007 titled "for the love of god."
the skull is covered in 8,601 pave-set diamonds weighing 1,106.18 carats! the large diamond in the center of the forehead is worth $4.2 million! it cost hirst $10-15 million to make and he sold it for $100 million dollars. in cash. now that is what you call a profit.
